Elliott Atwell — Hybrid Heirlooms
Charlottesville, VA, USA. November 2017. Elliott Atwell, a home chef with exquisite taste, reached out to me for these beauties. He was drawn to my style of mixing colors with unique materials.
As full custom knives can be very expensive, being able to customize a factory blade unique to Elliott at a fraction of the cost was ideal. “It makes an otherwise ordinary blade into both an art piece and an heirloom.”
This pair certainly does not disappoint. The 300mm Masamoto Gyuto is radiant and glitzy, embodying a slightly tapered hybrid wa-oval style handle. The 180mm Tetsuhiro White #1 Nakiri floats in wa form within a murky emerald ocean.
Materials in the gyuto include: blue maple burl ferrule, orange day-glo and gold-onyx spacers, and a hybrid black magic spalted maple burl body.
Materials in the nakiri include: redwood burl ferrule, black and white ebony + malachite + green glass acrylic spacers, and a smoky emerald red mallee burl hybrid body.
The contrast makes the handles fun and artistic without being too busy.
